What is TikTok Shop?
TikTok Shop is the commerce layer built into TikTok. Sellers list products, creators recommend them in shoppable content, and shoppers pay inside the app instead of being sent to an external website.
TikTok describes the same surfaces in its own announcements: products tagged in videos and LIVEs in the For You feed, LIVE sessions used for demonstrations, a profile Showcase with product tiles and reviews, and an affiliate network where approved creators promote products and earn commission. That description comes from the European expansion announcement published on 28 May 2026.
Shopping happens inside TikTok rather than in a separate consumer checkout app. TikTok Shop supports organic placements and paid Shop Ads, including GMV Max where available. Sellers can list and sell without buying ads, but paid promotion is part of the same Shop ecosystem.
Who is involved?
Every order involves a shopper and a seller, with TikTok Shop providing the commerce flow. Payment and logistics providers may support the transaction. An affiliate creator participates only when the order is attributed to that creator, whether through eligible shoppable content, a profile Showcase or, where available, a commission-ready affiliate link. The seller may be the product brand itself or an authorised retailer.
| Role | Controls or does | Money flow |
|---|---|---|
| Shopper | Chooses the product and whether to return it | Pays product price, shipping and tax at checkout |
| Seller | Listing, price, inventory, fulfillment route, return responses and affiliate settings within TikTok rules | Receives seller settlement after refunds, discounts, fees, commissions and adjustments |
| Product brand, if separate | Owns or authorizes the product identity and claims | Commercial terms with the seller may sit outside TikTok Shop settlement |
| Affiliate creator, if attributed | Selects eligible products and the content format | Earns commission on qualifying attributed orders after settlement |
| TikTok Shop and service providers | Commerce surfaces, checkout, policies and eligible payment, logistics and advertising services | Charge applicable referral, logistics, fulfillment or advertising fees |
A brand owns or authorizes the product identity. The seller owns the listing and is responsible for the order under TikTok Shop's seller terms, even when a logistics provider handles a step. They may be the same business or separate. TikTok Shop reports the transaction to the seller account that owns the listing. If you operate the seller account, the setup and growth steps are in how to sell on TikTok Shop.
Rules before listing and promotion
Sellers must follow the listing rules for their market before a product goes live. Creators promoting Shop products must keep the purchase path inside TikTok Shop rather than redirecting shoppers elsewhere.
How one TikTok Shop order works
A TikTok Shop order moves through eight practical steps, from discovery to settlement. Exact statuses and timing vary by market and fulfillment route.
- A shopper meets a product attached to a video, a LIVE stream, a product card or a profile Showcase, or follows a commission-ready affiliate link shared on or off TikTok where that route is available.
- Tapping the product opens its page inside TikTok, with price, variants, reviews and delivery terms.
- The shopper checks out through TikTok Shop. Approved payment providers facilitate payment, and some methods can open the provider's secure payment page.
- The order appears in the seller's Seller Center and is routed to whichever fulfillment method the seller uses.
- The order is fulfilled through an option available to that shop, such as Seller Shipping, TikTok Shipping or Fulfilled by TikTok. Dispatch, tracking and return duties depend on the option and the market's service-level rules.
- The order is delivered, and the market's return window opens.
- TikTok applies its referral fee. If a creator in the TikTok Shop affiliate program drove the order, commission is calculated on the qualifying amount.
- After delivery, seller settlement follows the shop's assigned settlement period and any unresolved after-sales checks. Affiliate commission is paid only after the related seller order settles.
Checkout GMV is not cash in the seller's bank or final creator earnings. Cancellations and refunds can change seller settlement and creator commission before it is paid. Under current US rules, if a refund or return begins after creator commission has already been paid, TikTok does not return that commission to the seller.
Where shoppers discover products
Shoppable video
A creator or seller attaches an eligible product to a short video. The product appears as a tappable card that opens the product detail and checkout flow inside TikTok Shop. Distribution can be organic or paid, so reach should not be inferred from the format alone.
LIVE shopping
In a LIVE session, the host demonstrates products, answers questions and pins items. TikTok's LIVE metrics guide lists per-stream measures such as GMV and click-to-order rate. Shop Analytics reports LIVE, video and product-card GMV separately, so compare the three formats as distinct content types.
Product cards and the profile Showcase
Product listings can be discovered through the Shop tab, search and profile Shop or Showcase surfaces, subject to market and account availability. A Showcase displays products on a seller, marketing or affiliate account profile. In the United States, eligible creators can also share commission-ready affiliate links on or off TikTok. Qualifying purchases from those links can be attributed to the creator. Surfaces and links can remain accessible without newly published content, but visibility and sales are not guaranteed.
TikTok's Shop Analytics documentation breaks GMV down by content type as LIVE GMV, Video GMV and Product Card GMV. These figures include canceled and refunded orders under the documented definition, so they are not settled revenue. Performance on one surface does not establish performance on another.
Who gets paid and when
The shopper completes one checkout. The order then carries separate amounts for seller settlement, applicable fees, tax, shipping and any creator commission. Those amounts do not all resolve on order day.
| Line | Recipient or handler | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Product price, shipping and tax | TikTok Shop checkout and approved payment providers | At checkout |
| Referral fee | TikTok Shop | Deducted from seller settlement, subject to refund rules |
| Affiliate commission | The creator | Under US rules, usually day 15 after delivery and only after seller settlement; later if after-sales remains open |
| Seller settlement | The seller | Based on the assigned settlement period; a reserve may remain held |
| Refunds and cancellations | The shopper | Adjust settlement; fees and paid commission follow their own refund rules |
GMV is a reporting metric, not a payout line. In current US Shop Analytics documentation, TikTok defines it as product list price multiplied by items sold, plus shipping, minus seller-funded and platform-funded discounts, minus tax. It is calculated at payment time and includes canceled and refunded orders. Other markets can label or calculate the metric differently, so use the local definition and never present GMV as net sales or settled revenue. For a full breakdown, read what GMV means on TikTok Shop.
Fee levels are set per market. As a dated example, TikTok's United States referral fee schedule, effective 31 October 2024 and last updated on 14 May 2026, applies 6% to most categories, 5% to five jewelry subcategories, and a tiered rate to pre-owned goods and collectibles. Those are US rates. Do not carry them into a plan for another market.
Creator commission is separate from the platform fee and is set by the seller on the product or the collaboration. TikTok's affiliate orders documentation explains how qualifying revenue, refunds and settlement affect the final amount. A listed commission rate is an offer, not a payout.
For a current market example, our United States TikTok Shop brands leaderboard publishes estimated GMV, estimated units, catalog size and promoter counts for the ten highest-GMV storefronts that met the leaderboard's minimum of 100 affiliate promoters in our July 2026 United States model.
