Who is Mika Ninagawa?

A Tokyo photographer known for saturated colour

Mika Ninagawa is a photographer, film director and artist, born in Tokyo in 1972. Her photographs are known for highly saturated colour, most often flowers, goldfish, cherry blossoms and portraits. Her official biography counts more than 120 photobooks and more than 150 solo exhibitions, and Rizzoli New York published a book of her photographs in 2010. The Tomio Koyama Gallery in Tokyo represents her work.

The Kimura Ihei Award came six years before her first film

Photography came first. In March 2001 she was named one of the winners of the 26th Kimura Ihei Photography Award, a Japanese photography prize, for the photobooks Pink Rose Suite and Sugar and Spice. Her first feature film as director, Sakuran, followed in 2007 and screened in the Berlinale Special section of the Berlin International Film Festival. Four more features came after it: Helter-Skelter in 2012, Diner and No Longer Human in 2019, and xxxHOLiC in 2022. In February 2020 Netflix released FOLLOWERS, her first drama series as director, worldwide.

A Tokyo 2020 board seat and immersive shows with EiM

In 2014 she was appointed to the board of the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. She is a member of EiM, a creative team she makes immersive exhibitions with. Eternity in a Moment, their show at TOKYO NODE in Toranomon Hills, Tokyo, ran from December 2023 to February 2024, and Lights of the beyond, Shadows of this world followed at the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art from January to March 2025. From February to May 2026 she showed crystal installations at Kitano Tenmangu, a shrine in Kyoto, and staged an immersive theatre piece there with EiM and the performance company DAZZLE.

Two Instagram accounts, one personal and one for artworks

@ninagawamika is her personal account, and its Instagram bio reads Photographer and Film Director. In a June 2026 post there, she pointed followers to a second account, @mikaninagawa.official, which she keeps mainly for artworks and which her official site links. Her paid work for brands appears on the personal account, including the Tokyo Disney Resort photography she posted from September to December 2025.

Brands Mika Ninagawa has worked with

Mika Ninagawa's paid work on Instagram spans 14 sponsored posts we can see, from October 2017 to December 2025, and the four newest are all for Tokyo Disney Resort. In June 2026 she also announced a product collaboration with the macaron brand Ladurée on the same account.

In September 2025 she was named photographer of Tokyo Disney Resort's Imagining the Magic project, with more than 80 new works shot in Fantasy Springs, a themed area of Tokyo DisneySea, for its second anniversary. Her captions list where the pictures went: a photo exhibition at Fujifilm Square in Tokyo from 21 November to 18 December 2025, then Osaka in March 2026, plus merchandise, restaurant menus, hotel rooms and Disney Resort Line tickets. Her September caption says she was glad to collaborate with the resort again.

The four Tokyo Disney Resort posts averaged 17,446 likes, 1.76 times her September 2026 average of 9,897, and the strongest, an artwork of Mickey and Minnie Mouse posted in late September 2025, drew 31,472 likes. Across all 14 sponsored posts we can see, the average is 9,784, within 2% of her current average. Walt Disney is also the brand her audience's affinities rank first, ahead of Apple, Starbucks, Pokemon and Chanel, so the 1.76 describes one campaign for a brand her followers already favour, not her paid posts in general.

Before Disney, her #pr posts included two stays at the Fauchon Hotel Kyoto, in November 2023 and February 2024, where, as she notes, the sweets in the room are Fauchon's own. In the first of them she wrote that the hotel's pink matched her own style.

Her newest brand work is the Ladurée collaboration she announced in June 2026: macaron boxes and cookie tins carrying her visuals, sold online from 26 June and in Ladurée shops from 3 July, plus an afternoon tea menu at the Hibiya salon in Tokyo from 3 July to 17 September. That post drew 33,473 likes, 3.4 times her average.

@ninagawamika is Mika Ninagawa's verified personal Instagram, with 1,135,535 followers and 10,493 posts in September 2026. This section shows what she posts there, from cherry blossoms to Kyoto theatre notices, how those followers respond, and which two event Reels passed 5 million views.

Her feed reads like a working diary: her own photographs, with captions about where she went to take them. A cherry blossom series goes out under her hashtag #実花さんの桜, which means Mika's cherry blossoms, and a spring 2026 Reel from Kyoto, with 33,937 likes, says that simply getting to the spot is where every picture starts. The weeping plum trees she visits in Mie every year, a lantern festival and trips to Okinawa, Hong Kong and Shenzhen sit beside exhibition notices, a cover she shot for the magazine AERA, and an August 2026 run of posts about the cartoon characters Chiikawa.

On her posts, likes average 9,897 and comments 23, an engagement rate of 0.87% in September 2026. Her Reels average 190,765 views, about one view for every six followers. Month by month, average likes ran from 7,716 in April 2026 to 10,815 in July, while the follower count held between 1,129,019 and 1,136,184 from March to September and finished 3,264 above its March level.

Two Reels passed 5 million views, and both film events. The January 2025 Reel from the opening of her Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art show has 10,351,823 views, and an August 2024 clip of the Kihoku lantern festival, eight seconds she says took a ten-hour round trip, has 5,648,328 views and 170,057 likes. The most-liked of her top posts is the April 2026 notice for Hanayoi no Daichakai, an immersive theatre show of about 70 minutes that she made with DAZZLE and EiM at Kitano Tenmangu, with 186,311 likes.

Four of her six most-liked top posts are about her own shows and installations in Kyoto. The theatre notice drew 18.8 times her average likes, and her June 2026 post pointing followers to @mikaninagawa.official, her artwork account, drew 84,232 likes, 8.5 times the average. Her sponsored Tokyo Disney Resort posts averaged 17,446 likes, between those peaks and her everyday 9,897.

Methodology

How we analyse creators

Every figure on this page is drawn from Click Analytic platform data and verified public sources, assessed across six signal categories.

Reach & relevance

Followers on every platform the creator actually runs, weighted by how much of that audience sits in your target market. A big number in the wrong country is reach you cannot buy, so the weighting comes first.

Audience profile

Age brackets, gender split, top countries and languages of the people who really see the posts. This is the part that decides whether a creator fits a brief, and it is measured on the account, not guessed from the content.

Engagement signals

Average likes, comments and views on recent posts, compared with creators of the same follower size on the same platform. The comparison matters more than the raw rate: a 2% rate can be strong at 2M followers and weak at 20K.

Audience quality

The share of followers that look like real people versus suspicious, inactive or mass-following accounts, scored 0 to 100 with fake-follower detection on every profile. It is the number that tells you how much of the reach is actually there.

Activity & consistency

Posting cadence over the last weeks and follower growth over 30 days. An account that has gone quiet or is shedding followers performs differently from one that is live and climbing, whatever its size.

Commercial readiness

Sponsored-post history, the brands already mentioned, category fit for your industry and an estimated cost per post. Together they say whether the creator is used to working with brands and roughly what a collaboration costs.
