What is an influencer marketing manager?

What an influencer marketing manager actually does: sourcing and vetting creators, negotiating deals, briefing content, and reporting results. Plus the skills that matter and how to get the job.

Jules CarmauxBy Jules CarmauxMarketing tips

An influencer marketing manager is the person who runs a brand’s creator program end to end: finding creators, negotiating terms, briefing content, tracking results, and keeping the relationships healthy. In smaller companies it is one hat among several on a marketing generalist. In bigger teams it is a dedicated role sitting between social media, performance marketing, and PR.

What the job actually involves

  • Sourcing. Finding and vetting creators whose audience matches the brand: right niche, right country, real followers, engagement that survives a closer look.
  • Deals. Reaching out, negotiating fees and usage rights, and getting deliverables into a written agreement.
  • Briefing. Writing briefs that give creators guardrails without killing the voice their audience follows them for.
  • Measurement. Tracking codes, links, and post performance, then turning that into a report the finance team accepts.
  • Relationships. Renewing the creators who perform, and ending the partnerships that do not, without burning bridges.

Skills that matter more than the title

The role rewards three things: judgment about people (can this creator credibly sell this product?), comfort with numbers (cost per acquisition, not just likes), and fast, clear writing, because most of the job is briefs, negotiations, and reports. Tools can be learned in a week; those three cannot.

A typical week

Monday: review last week’s post performance and code redemptions. Midweek: outreach and negotiation for the next batch, brief approvals, content reviews. Friday: reporting and payments. Around all of it: answering creator DMs, because slow replies kill good partnerships.

In-house manager, agency, or software?

Brands usually start with a generalist plus software, move to a dedicated manager once creator spend justifies a salary, and add an agency when they enter markets or languages the team does not cover. A creator search platform replaces the most time-expensive part of the job: Click Analytic covers discovery across 400M+ Instagram, TikTok and YouTube profiles, audience and fake-follower checks before outreach, and campaign tracking after it, which is exactly the sourcing and measurement half of the role.

How to become one

Most influencer marketing managers come from social media management, PR, or performance marketing. The fastest way in is proof, not certificates: run one small creator campaign end to end for any brand, document the numbers, and you have a portfolio most applicants lack.
