With costs of nearly $75,000 per seat to enter the 2024 Met Gala, it was a jam-packed event with over 600 attendees.

But, this time, the 2024 Met Gala had a twist. 😵‍💫

Previous years we’ve seen the likes of James Charles, The D’Amelios, Jackie Aina, Nikkie Tutorials, Addison Rae and so many more.

This year? We saw only 3 influencers! But there’s more.

👉 Influencers, not traditional celebrities, were the talk of the town. 

With this year’s theme, “Garden of Time,” attendees were expected to dazzle with gothic and floral patterns. 

However, it was influencers who mastered the theme, outdoing their celebrity counterparts. Is this a sign of things to come?

Influencers vs. celebrities: A style showdown

At the Met Gala, influencers like Hayley Baylee and Emma Chamberlain showed off their fashion prowess. 

Hayley’s elaborate outfit sparked discussions on social media, with one viewer commenting, “Now why are the influencers outdoing celebrities … #MetGala2024.”

Emma Chamberlain has presented the Met Gala twice now!

Why?

Because she’s got a witty interview style and she’s proven herself as a key player in the high-fashion space with her Louis Vuitton partnership and front row seat at Acne Studios.

She’s even worked with Kendal Jenner!

And at the 2024 Met Gala?

Emma Chamberlain was wearing a custom gown by Jean Paul Gaultier. It made a striking statement about her evolution in the fashion world as she interviewed the attendees.

Some viewers also pointed out Wisdom Kaye was “eating celebrities up” with his stylish looks.

At first glance, it looks like viewers loved the inclusion of influencers at the Met Gala. But not everyone was happy about the newcomers. 😓

2024 Met Gala’s public reaction: Mixed feelings

The reaction to influencers’ dominance was mixed. 

Some social media users expressed frustration about influencers attending the gala at all. 

A comment that stood out was, “I hope Anna Wintour knows she ruined the Met Gala forever. Infesting the place with influencers and B-listers made the real celebrities scurry away.”

Yet, others defended the influencers’ presence. 

A notable tweet mentioned, “Y’all want to complain about influencers getting invited to the #MetGala every year, but they’re eating the girlies up. The celebrity guests are flopping in comparison.”

My opinion? The influencers are outshining the celebs. And I’m not making this up. I found some juicy stats to prove it.

Why influencers dominated the 2024 Met Gala

I think influencers may outshine celebrities because of their constant engagement with fashion on social media. 

They are always ‘on’ and directly interacting with their audience, which makes them more adept at hitting the right notes for such themed events.

I used my influencer marketing platform and found some interesting stats to chew over:

📊 Nearly 33% of Hayley’s fans are also interested in fashion.

📊 Almost 40% of Wisdom’s fans are interested in fashion.

📊 As for Emma, a whopping 20% are interested in fashion.

Looking at this, I came to a fantastic conclusion. All three creators know their audiences well. They know what content resonates with their audiences. So, they create it.

Simple, isn’t it? It’s not the only stat that turned my head.

Their combined reach is also astounding. Emma, Hayley, and Wisdom have 24.62M followers on Instagram combined.

📊 Emma, for instance, gets around 5.6M reel views on Instagram.

📊 Wisdom Kaye is close behind Emma with 5.56M reel views.

📊 As for Hayley, she gets 3.57M reel views!

That’s more than most celebrities. No wonder they made such an impact. And talking about celebrities, how did they fare at the 2024 Met Gala? 🤔

Celebrity responses at the Met Gala: Hits and misses

Despite the buzz around influencers, some celebrities like Zendaya, who wore a stunning Maison Margiela outfit, received high praise.

This one post on Instagram gained nearly 90K likes in less than 24 hours!

In contrast, rapper Doja Cat’s choice of a bath towel as an outfit raised eyebrows, with debates about her intent to change outfits later in the evening.

My final thoughts

We’re witnessing a shift in the dynamics of fashion influence.

With their knack for social media and direct communication, influencers are challenging traditional celebrities on the red carpet.

What’s clear is that the Met Gala has become a battleground not just for fashion but also for influence.
